Feeling Vs. Knowing

April 04, 2008

Many times lyrics of a song will jump out at me. This morning as I was lying in bed, trying to muster up the strength to get out of bed and face another day, this song came on the radio. It speaks of something that has been on my mind a lot lately – what I FEEL about God’s existence in my life vs. what I KNOW about God’s existence in my life. Even though I FEEL sometimes He’s not there, I KNOW He is.

This is “Never Alone” by Barlow Girl

I waited for you today
But you didn't show
No no no
I needed You today
So where did You go?
You told me to call
Said You'd be there
And though I haven't seen
You Are You still there?

Chorus:
I cried out with no reply
And I can't feel You by my side
So I'll hold tight to what I know
You're here and I'm never alone

And though I cannot see You
And I can't explain why
Such a deep, deep reassurance
You've placed in my life

We cannot separate
'Cause You're part of me
And though You're invisible
I'll trust the unseen

I cried out with no reply
And I can't feel You by my side
So I'll hold tight to what I know
You're here and I'm never alone

We cannot separate, you're part of me
And though you're invisible
I trust the unseen

I cried out with no reply
And I can't feel You by my side
So I'll hold tight to what I know
You're here and I'm never alone

  1. Good words to remember. Even when we cannot FEEL God's presence, He is still with us and will NEVER leave us.

  2. This song.... It makes me cry sometimes. Especially when I feel far from God. It is a very good reminder. Maybe that's why I cry. Because I know it's true.

  3. Thanks for posting this, Jennifer! In reading it, these verses came to mind from Psalm 139:

    1 O LORD, you have searched me
    and you know me.
    2 You know when I sit and when I rise;
    you perceive my thoughts from afar.

    3 You discern my going out and my lying down;
    you are familiar with all my ways.

    4 Before a word is on my tongue
    you know it completely, O LORD.

    5 You hem me in—behind and before;
    you have laid your hand upon me.

    In an article I read this weekend from Today's Christian Woman, the author said that Hebrews 13:5 is literally translated as "I will never, no never, no never leave you or forsake you." She said this is the only triple negative in Scripture. Seems like God's reassurance that He will never, never, never leave or forsake us.
